Aglianico (pronounced ah-lee-AHN-e-koh) is one of the world’s oldest and most celebrated wine grapes. The varietal originated in Greece, was subsequently planted by Greek settlers in southern Italy more than 2,000 years ago and today is considered one of the three great Italian winegrapes. This venerable Old World varietal has found a New World home at Terra d’Oro. This grape thrives when planted on hillsides at higher altitudes, so Terra d’Oro’s Amador County ranch is perfectly suited for this noble grape, which we planted here 23 years ago.
The grapes for the 2018 Terra d’Oro Aglianico were fermented in stainless steel tanks for a gradual and controlled extraction of tannin and color. Tanks were pumped over as needed depending on these characteristics.
The grapes for the 2018 were picked by hand at night to retain the bright acidity and keep sugar levels stable. After fermentation in open-top containers, the wine was aged in a combination of French and Hungarian oak (28% new), for 13 months to add a gentle toasty oak complement to the rich, juicy fruit characteristics of the Aglianico grape.
Food Pairing Notes
The wine is rich and rustic, making it a perfect accompaniment to hearty Italian dishes such as spicy sausage pizza or braised beef with mushrooms and balsamic vinegar.
