Terra d'Oro Exploration Series Viognier 2020
Medium gold in color, the 2020 Viognier offers complex aromas of cantaloupe, persimmon, lychee, slate, lime curd, pineapple, baked pear and lemongrass. On the palate, the wine is round and pleasing with tropical fruit flavors on the midpalate, complemented by the bright acidity and long finish of ripe citrus flavors
Viognier does very well in Amador. It ripens beautifully, and the soil lends a nutmeg and clove spice element to the more-typical floral and citrus characteristics of Viognier. The fruit for this wine comes from a small block in our Montevina Vineyards which is always our earliest ripening block of Viognier in Amador.
The grapes went into our basket press and the juice divided between our concrete fermentation tank and two new French oak barrels. We inoculated with a cultured yeast to finish the fermentation. After fermentation, one barrel was used to top up the fermentation tank, and the wine aged on the lees for two months prior to bottling for further complexity.
The grapes were picked at night so they would arrive cold to the winery. Instead of pressing immediately, we lightly crushed the grapes into small bins and set them in a cool room of the winery for 48 hours. This extended skin contact enhances Viognier’s expressive aromatics.
Food Pairing Notes
Viognier pairs great with a Zesty Paella or course salty cheese.
